about

This installation is the result of a creative direction exercise on the music video “Fukk Sleep” directed by Diana Kunst for the New York rapper, A$ap Rocky, in collaboration with FKA Twigs. An abstraction and detailed analysis of the communicative elements in the video was done at the first stage of this project. The analysis focused on the contexts of the artists and their environment, as well as the formal aesthetic elements that where intentionally used throughout the video to create a narrative.

the installation

An installation was created featuring a pedestal displaying an ornamented balaclava, protected by a transparent acrylic showcase. Focused lighting and the pedestal create a museum-like atmosphere, elevating the balaclava as a luxury item.

Efforts were made to align the installation’s narrative with the video’s formal language, seen in the pedestal, neon lighting, concept manifesto narration, and the beaded balaclava. The audience’s interaction is crucial, as the pedestal’s height compels viewers to admire the piece from below, creating an act of admiration.

concept

The concept created for this project explores the act of “flexing” in african american rap culture as a response to historical oppression.
